Hlava IV

Head IV

Once more in sombre evening clad, despondent, Sir Norbert's castle looms intimidating, while in the eastern sky, sun co-respondent the moon glows round, full, golden-red, eye-sating. Were that I could rise up above mere stating to enthral how the evening gleamed resplendent, depict nocturnal crystal, honey-filling, sensual silence o'er slates easing, spilling.
Kandida, krásná dcera kastelána u vysokého okna hlavu sklání a, zapoměvší svého vyšívání, mesíčním tichem zdá se zkolébána v unylé snění romantických paní, zatímco zdálky zvoní dni už hrana: zvuk zvonku utopený, jaksi snový, jejž rozhoupává hermit fialový. Candida, the Castellan's daughter maiden, so fair of face and rich with beauty's treasure, pauses, hands drooped, her lap embroidery-laden, framed by the window tall she sits at leisure, as if by lunar gong beat, vibrant, measured cradled to dream of idyll's youthful Eden, while from afar the purple hermit's swinging rings the death-knell of day, or night's beginning.
Candida is engrossed in introspecting, weaving her soul's own sentimental border, unsure whether to wed, or yet electing chastity, join some Sisterhood or Order. Her father has for some time now implored her to wed with speed, his wish is worth respecting. But she is drawn in this respect to falter - as Bride of Christ she'll stand before the altar.
Why is her father driving her to marry ? - His Master is renowned for womanising. Norbert's proclivities are legendary, in pursuit of young girls most enterprising. His eye's been seen upon her, seizing, sizing - what can be done before he picks her cherry? One thing - that's why Ermyn would love his daughter to be behind marital bricks and mortar.
How else could she be saved, how else defended - his Master would not stand for opposition. He sees her future dark and bitter blended, in minor key, a chilling composition. What can he do to break the premonition while but a Castellan with offspring splendid. Until she is well out of Norbert's clutches he finds no peace in anything he touches.
And so he keeps incessantly reminding: 'Candida dear, it's time to find a hubby.' She hears him out, though her tears barely hiding, frightened of men's objectives base and grubby. If only she could wed some cherub chubby, instead then, opt for holy vows most binding. She has no notion why her father's driven to this and feels no trepidation, even.
And thus the gap between the two grows wider; Ermyn's a widower to crown the matter, - Candida has no mother's hand to guide her, - He'd find it easier, though scarcely better, to remain silent, lest he should upset her, or out of loyalty to his provider. Circling in whirlpools of anxiety's torrent, Ermyn's predicament is just abhorrent.
At pains to thwart his Master's power-wielding Candida's father wants to see her wedded; She doesn't know why he is so unyielding, wedlock to her seems far from feather-bedded. Gazing now through the window crosswise-leaded reminds of Nuns, from secular pains shielding. And so she gazes, her own future fixing. Into her thoughts, a lute is intermixing...
While she is gazing, miles away, escaping, the lute strikes up, moist, plaintive, mind invasive, smooth as silk, gentle, enveloping, draping, echoing off the fortress walls, evasive. Golden and sweet as honey, all-pervasive; She looks up, sees Fido's face gargoyle-aping. The dwarf stops playing and bows low, head baring - doffing the jester's cap he's fond of wearing.
Two alone, company uncomplementary. Gesturing to the beau he's serenading Fido requests her help to trick the sentry. Candida guilelessly his access aiding opens the window for him to gain entry, naive, spurning precautions elementary; it would seem she does not need much persuading. Short but aspiring, Fido's only human, Candida unaware she's now a woman.
Kandida, dětská a nic netušící, a sladkým hlasem loutny okouzlena, otvírá okna pravou polovici, neb těší ji ta zábava a změna. Like damsel-fly beguiled by ugly spider, she trusts in Fido's gift of entertaining. Breaking her solitude he sits beside her and tunes his instrument, strings tensing, straining - then lifts his eyes, plaintive devotion feigning, and soft notes fly away like downy eider. A song of youth, which fresh, unspoilt, alluring, time's tempest scatters, frail and unenduring.
Tu Fido s loutnou u nohou jí sedá a soustředěně nástroj chvíli ladí, pak zbožně ke Kandidě oči zvedá a prsty po strunách mu hbitě pádí. Začíná píseň o křehkosti mládí, jež vichr času rychle láme, běda; nuž užívejme jeho krásné květy, dokavad rychle nepovadnou léty. Alas. Let's not delay, youth's blossom scenting, while in full flower be appreciated, for all too soon will time's hand unrelenting pluck and discard these blooms, thus it is fated. Already for too long we may have waited..., and so on and so forth, yarn unrelenting. Candida swells a tear, her bosom heaving, caught in the web unseen that Fido's weaving.
The Moon is high. The castle lightly sprinkling with icing-sugar beams, through Cirrus sifted, adding harmonics to each note, a twinkling to Fido's longing gaze, eyelids up-lifted. Candida's grip is weakening, mind drifted, what's happening to her she has no inkling. In moonlit trance, in word-cage silver plated, Fido entraps her, onslaught unabated.
Now he turns to his own peculiar story: A story hitherto to none imparted, of fate so bitter, harsh and unforgiving. With trembling hand and voice the curtain's parted to reveal scenes of life scarcely worth living. How he would like to flee this world deceiving - mayhap to the regret of some, kind hearted - but no, his name would not take long to wither, given the happenstance that brought him hither.
Rodiče nepoznal, a dětství svoje si pamatuje nedosti už jasně. Parents unknown, an orphan, cold, forsaken, barely can he conceive a time more testing. Some circus-troupe had pity on him taken, saw he would get good laughs with little jesting. In time his music saved him this molesting for that's when Norbert bought him, saved his bacon. Behold, his twisted form had found its function, (quoth Fido, oozing pathos with true unction...)
Norbert was drawn to Fido's deformation, seeing how it would crown his composition, a grotesquely befitting decoration to complement his gothic apparition. That the dwarf be a competent musician was unexpected, drawing admiration. His Master's Jester, then, and prized election, highlight of Norbert's curious collection.
Tak stal se Fido šaškem svého pána neb budí smích již pouhou svojí tváří a jeho další schopnost nečekaná, že totiž jako hvězda loutny září, mu pomahá, že dobře se mu daří, však přec je jeho existence planá, a pod přetvářkou usměvavé masky lká srdce, ktere nepoznalo lásky Fed by musicianship, well-to-do surely, but inside feeling empty, void of flavour, behind the mask's smile sighing, feebly, poorly, a heart which has no hope of winning favour. Quest for companionship - a lost endeavour, sentenced to live alone, glee feigning purely. Who would be drawn to such a freak of nature as scarcely pips a riding-boot in stature.
a ani doufat nesmí v tomto směru, neb odsouzen je věčně do samoty, vždyť kdo by chtěl mít zájem o příšeru, jež sotva zvící vysoké je boty: čekají ho jen trampoty a psoty, vždyť všechněm ženám odporný je věru, ač uvnitř v prsou plá mu srdce žhavé, a schopné lásky hluboké a pravé. No love in store, no private joys awaiting, no lady of sound mind him ever finding other than quite revolting - fascinating at best but ne'er in arms held, binding. Although a manly heart burns in him, blinding, his only touches hers through air vibrating. Though capable of Love, his heart is banished and like a dog chained up, deprived and punished.
Za trochu lásky životem bych platil, kdyby mne její úsměv chvíli zlatil, For crumbs of Love I'd cross the widest ocean, battle through snowstorm, barefoot, hunger-smitten... thus went the song of Fido's great devotion, lyrics A.N.Other, previous had written. Nightingale song, blackbirds' my pill would sweeten, balmy as spring, or summer's soothing lotion. For crumbs of Love I'd trade my life - exchanging all for Love's smile, warming, life re-arranging.
To that kind soul who'd stoop, see past my clowning I would give thanks, obliging be, devoted, unwavering, with my allegiance crowning my given name (where faithfulness is quoted), with loyalty such as has ne'er been noted - yea, if but once in Love's hot lava drowning, - I'd remain true until my frame contorted gives its last breath, my life as worthless thwarted.
Za jeho lásku k tobě vytrvalou ho obdař přízní aspoň krátkou, malou.“ Oh, Candida, lily-white soul, untainted, before you I prostrate my hopeless yearning. Your heart, that crystal pyxis, clear and sainted, admit a heart which has known nought but spurning. Pity me yet - with thy sweet mercy turning my hell into a paradise love-painted. In return for the lifelong vow I aver, grant me one brief delight, one single favour.
Fido croons on and Candida is taken entirely in. Her head is light and reeling, as he plucks at her heart caution forsaken, her bosom heaves, spills o'er with fellow feeling. Who would have guessed this wretch could be appealing, bonding together words and notes and making a song to rival Orpheus in power. She is in tears, and he has found his hour.
Candida beckons. Fido needs no bidding. He climbs her skirts and on her lap now seated cuddles against her chest, hands upward leading, claws at her throat, palms calloused coarsely skidding, while she is overcome, glazed-eyed, defeated. Against her perfect face his own abutting, rough-hewn in contrast, angular and jutting.
Gently her neckline now with kisses wetting, her forehead, eyelids, cheeks intensely blushing, Candida swoons in response to his petting, her racing pulse her last resistance flushing, and Fido feels more daring, almost rushing, kisses her lips, parting the feeble setting. Ajar, inside his ladled tongue now wedging, forcing the pace, for base, deep feelings dredging.
Swaying, her fall from grace is swiftly looming. Candida's maiden fragile waist is folding, her face ecstatically with roses blooming, we know too well what Fate in store is holding. Softened with spirit pure, more kneading, moulding the clay, priming a furnace fuming. Fido, the wild boar now, for truffles digging, his lofty claims a ruse for filthy pigging.
Thus Candida is weakening, in rapture sliding into a gorge of gorgeous feeling, the Dwarf toadlike unwrapping what he's captured, pulls at her corset, loosens, pulling, spilling, making no bones about his purpose chilling while all too feebly she resists her future. It seems the Dwarf has lofty aims - he's lusting after her breasts, her bust will quench his busting.
When suddenly Swish! Swish! The wretch is skitting down from her lap, in agony cavorting, like carpet dust driven by sudden beating - his pilot, lust, the mission is aborting. A sudden frostbite ends his flowery courting, a wilted stalk does seem an image fitting. Writhing along the floor, his body clasping, winded and mute, for life's dear breath he's gasping.
Neb nebudeš-li rychle chtíti jíti, zadnici holou před ní zbičuji ti!“ "Out of my sight, you filthy monstrous vermin!" the Master calls in righteous indignation. "Your punishment though - later I'll determine. For now you'd best be full of trepidation. Clear off, before I brand some education on your stark naked butt, you little gremlin! How dare you lay your hands on Ermyn's daughter. You deserve to be crushed, too low for slaughter!"
Poděšen Fido pryč i s loutnou pádí a jeho nářek slábne v chodbách hradu, pan Norbert Kandidě teď vlasy hladí a bere ji i za okrouhlou bradu. Ač uchránil ji od skřetího pádu, i jeho dívčí vnady vilně ladí, a dívku, která studem, zmatkem vzlyká, chce sám teď svádět místo trpaslíka. Fido in terror scuttles off, half choking, body and soul in shame and anguish aching, holding tight to his lute, pity evoking, wailing a trail to mark the route he's taking. Norbert meanwhile, consideration faking, holds the girl's chin, her loosened hair starts stroking: Saved from one fiend, much to this other's liking, who feels the iron's hot enough for striking.
Candida fearful, shamed, is blubbing, sobbing. Norbert has caught a fish without much trying. With expert eyes the situation probing, kisses her on the mouth to hush the crying. While tongue and hands advance in further prying, her wriggles only help with the disrobing. He now is loosening the last restriction, soon to make palpable what once was fiction.
And now the part for which you've all been waiting: She is undone. Twin orbs by moonlight basted, ripe fruit of doubled labours, titillating, inviting to be nuzzled, slowly tasted. And such a chance must surely not be wasted. What happens next is not worth complicating. Norbert is like a babe, hunger assuaging. Sucking, while hands explore zones more engaging.
Ó, Ermyne, ó, vdovče kasteláne, tvé obavy se plní víc než hbitě! Tvůj pán teď zajisté už neustane a zkazí ti tvou dceru, ještě dítě. Oh Ermyn, widowed Castellan, poor father! To give up now how could he be persuaded? Your master Norbert has got going, rather. Your daughter, but a child is to be raided, by lechery of one kind or another to be bespoilt, and your own good name traded, as per your fears, for gossip, sneers and scoffing. 'Candy - the concubine' is in the offing!
Snad větve do něj větrem byly sváty. Právě, když Norbert zvedl dívce šaty a políbil jí stehno až to mlasklo. Však nežli mohl dokončit své dílo, do okna cosi silně udeřilo. Crash!! Glass and eardrums both attacking, a blast sends window shards down, brightly scattered. Maybe a branch, gust-blown has sent it packing - or has the pane spontaneously shattered? Norbert, had just lifted her skirts, unfettered, wet lips on thigh, loudly together smacking, but just as he was poised for escalation, the breaking window broke his concentration.
Looking around, upward toward the ceiling, he sees a sight that stops his sexual antics. All lust is gone, and Norbert cowers, reeling, staring confused, incredulous, half frantic. For in the air a creature hangs, gigantic, half man - half bat, singular unappealing! Powerful wings stretching out, nearer, bigger, and in their midst a manlike, hooded figure.
„Toť ďábel!“, hlavou Norbertovi blesklo, (ač osvícenec, přec si nebyl jistý). Tu zjevení zas do tabulek plesklo, latinsky zeptalo se: „Quid fecisti? Virginem hanc tu pane corrupisti!“ — a opět znovu udeřilo ve sklo. A zahuhlalo pak: „Non moechaberis! Sic moechatus sis, tunc condemnaberis!“ Devil incarnate! was his first conclusion, though irreligious sceptic, Faith denying. Nevertheless what else could be the fusion between a man and winged creature, flying. What he was seeing there was no denying, unless it was some powerful delusion. Booming, the vision challenged: Quid fecisti? Virginem hanc tu paene corrupisti!
Tapping the pane, circling, again approaching, spectre of conscience, blaming him, impeaching, on his self-certain sanity encroaching, pointing a hand, to penance calling, preaching. Once more addressing him with Latin teaching, an apparition devilish, reproaching: Uncompromising: Non moechaberis! Sic moechatus sis, tunc condemnaberis!!
Eftsoons the vision vampiric, monastic, let go, released the chamber's fenestration, gaining in height it soared on wings fantastic, joining the bats in lofty congregation, seeming a native of their population, no larger, only nearer, and more drastic. Until among the shadows it receded, and disappeared, its stern chastisement heeded.

Yet Norbert has been shaken to the marrow. Crossing his breast he asks the Lord's protection, not daring to resume, to plough the furrow, indeed, no such desire, quite out of action. Candida too, shaken from her deliction is confused, shy, back on the straight and narrow. By pangs of conscience stung, hides parts discovered, just as the moon by clouds is coyly covered.
Pan Norbert spěšně z komnaty té mizí; jsa dosud strachem celý rozechvělý a nevěda, co myslet o té visi, kterou tam s kastelánskou dcerou měli. Rozhodnut, že to Kajetánu sdělí a vyžádá si radu v této krisi, opouští Norbert kastelána sídlo a mílí tam, kde obytné má křídlo. Norbert makes haste, ('act now, ask questions later'), still reeling from the spectre's condemnation. They both had seen this eerie levitator, sent to frustrate illicit consummation. Tomorrow he would seek clarification, go to consult his chief collaborator, Caiaetanus. So, spurning Ermyn's daughter's charms, he departs, hurrying to his quarters.
But Candida, head in confusion reeling , throws herself to her knees humbled, befuddled, invokes the saints, to her mother appealing, seeking assurance in a world too muddled. Her first two would-be-lovers having cuddled she is perplexed by all their double dealing. Thawed by the heat of lust's erotic crazes, - fearful of doom in Hell's eternal blazes.
Neb zjevení ji poděsilo velmi, ač přišlo jako deus ex machina, a vysvobodilo ji z rukou šelmy, protože na ní byla také vina, neb sama roztávala, vášní siná, když na ni Norbert smilně blýskal bělmy, až umdlévala jemu pod rukama a kolena jí od sebe šla sama. The apparition has wrecked her composure. Sent to her aid like Deus Ex Machina to save her from the full hideous measure of Norbert's clutches vile. A would-be sinner, nevertheless, her too-willing demeanour, her voluntary giving-in to pleasure... Under his stare, his hands, no prompting needed, spreading her knees, uncoerced, passage ceded.
Conversely, apparitions notwithstanding, the episode leaves an unpleasant flavour. Let us yearn after purer understanding, let's rise above the flesh to seek our Saviour. Not like the beasts: unseemly in behaviour, but, being Soul-less, can't be thought offending. Now Candida is sure, almost committed: among the Neophytes to be admitted.

Tomorrow will decide. All doubt to scatter, Caiaetanus, the master's Chief Adviser is the right man to ask, end idle chatter. The time has come to turn to someone wiser. Alas, naive Candida will regret her choice - Caiaetan is not God's sympathiser. Easily swayed, her lesson soon forgotten; - trusting angelic form, whose core is rotten.
